Social Media Day 2014 entitled #BoomPH (Best of Online Media in the Philippines) was celebrated on June 28, 2014 at the SM Aura Samsung Hall.

Keynote speaker Jonathan Yabut discussed that social media is not just for posting selfies.

“That’s the problem with all of us. We’re good with selfies because we’re good in reacting. We’re always good in complaining and reacting against the government.”

He stated that social media can just be an avenue in coming up with ideas to solve the country’s problems but it is the effort and unity of the people that would really create an impact.

“We need to admit that social media can only be effective in mobilizing and moving but someone else at the end of the day has to act on it.”

Distinguished media personalities namely Ms. Raine Musngi (ANC), Ms. Pia Hontiveros (Solar TV), and Ms. Tina Arceo Dumlao (Philippine Daily Inquirer) stood as moderators in the three panel discussions titled The Philippine Digital Landscape: Current State and Trends, Social Media for Social Good, and Evolution of Media, respectively.

Representatives from different social media platforms were also present to promote their advocacies.

Globe, SM Cares, SM Supermalls, ThoughtBuzz, BPI, and Samsung Hall sponsored the event.

Social Media Day 2014 is spearheaded by TweetUp Manila, a community of netizens that organizes regular and periodic Twitter Meetups (TweetUps!) in Metro Manila.

Social Media Day is a global celebration held in dozens of cities and countries worldwide.
