Asteroid (3757) 1982XB now bears the name “Anagolay” after it was named by Filipino student, Mohammad Abqary Alon.
The asteroid was named after the Philippine goddess of lost things.
Alon’s suggestion of the name was just one of the over 1500 entries from 85 countries submitted to the Space Generation Advisory Council’s (SGAC’s) Near Earth Projects (NEO) Project Group which launched a campaign to name an asteroid late last year.
The Minor Planet Center (MPC) released the latest list of approved names for known asteroids of which Anagolay was one. SGAC’s official announcement was posted by Filipino astronaut Rogel Mari Sese on his Facebook wall.
SGAC is a non-governmental organization and network which aims to represent university students and young professionals to the United Nations, space agencies, industry, and academia.
MPC is responsible for the identification, designation, and orbit computation for minor planets, comets, and outer irregular natural satellites of the major planets.
