Voice Care Philippines held a free Voice Care for Teachers workshop at the Creativoices Productions office in Makati City, November 17. The participants of the workshop earned their slot through an online contest in celebration of World Teachers Day last October 5.
The workshop was facilitated by Voice Care Philippines Executive Director Ada Cuaresma, and Voice Care Philippines Founder Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales.
Learning healthy vocal practices is more than a simple list of do’s and don’ts in order to prevent damage to vocal folds. This is why in the Voice Care for Teachers workshop, the participants were taught the process of voice production, in order for them to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for voice care. Furthermore, they were given exercises for breathing and body alignment – two very important aspects of the voice, which are often overlooked and misunderstood. The workshop also included a “vocal workout,” a set of warm up and cool down exercises that help meet the demands on the voice of teachers.
The workshop also included a subject on public speaking, as this is pretty much what teachers do in a teaching day. The participants were given tips on how to utilize the elements of voice (pitch, volume, tempo, etc.) in order to create a variation on their voice. Although the workshop is mostly about the voice, gestures and body language were also discussed. This aspect of the training is beneficial for the teachers to make their teaching more effective and engaging, especially in this age of millennial learning.
At the end of the workshop, each participant was certified as a “Voice Care Ambassador”. They now carry the responsibility and the privilege to spread the voice care advocacy to their fellow educators.
