Participating in online group chats? Commenting and sharing advocacies on social media? Playing virtual community –building games? Log off your smartphones, young people! Let’s get real in time for International Youth Day!
Focusing on the theme, “Youth Civic Engagement in Agriculture and Fisheries”, the National Youth Commission celebrates the IYD on August 12, 2015, from 8AM to 5PM, at the SM North Sky Dome in Quezon City.
Youth, aged 15-30, especially those involved in agriculture and fisheries, are invited to b part of the one-day event, which will include dialogues about awareness and appreciation for getting involved in farming and fishing activities.
“Many youth today are glued to their smartphones, living in their virtual houses, restaurants and farms,” said Usec Gio Tingson, Chairperson of the NYC. “Why not translate their energy and passion to real life? Let’s help make them realize that agriculture is not only fun, but that is a major key in ensuring a sustainable future as well.”
Among the guests speaking in the event are the UN Secretary General Envoy for Youth, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi, Senator Grace Poe and Representative Anthony del Rosario of the House Committee on Youth.
Outstanding youth from the fields of agriculture, education, employment, environment, health, participation and governance, will also be recognized for the first Youth Leading Others ( YoLO ) Awards.
The event will also see performances from various artists, such as Gloc 9, WCOPQA 2015 Grand Champion Lloyd Montebon and dance group Junior New System, and celebrities, which include celebrity Derrick Monasterio, will also perform during the event.
This year’s celebration is presented by SM North EDSA Skydome and Goya, in cooperation with Jampacked Promotions, Inc., Prime Watch Media and The Philippine Star and supported by Maynilad, Globe, GIST.ph and Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry.
