BennyBunnyBand and the Kuneho Rock

When we first watched BennyBunnyBand perform live at Wikalele held at Sev’s Cafe last August 1, we were amazed. Benny was a real rock star. He was full of energy and he danced madly on the stage while singing and enthusiastically strumming the chords of his ukulele. In fact, we could not get over the band’s song entitled “Dear Laarni”. Who would, in the first place? The music the band produces is so catchy.

BennyBunnyBand is a three-piece band composed of Benny Giron (vocals and ukulele), Jhen Dela Cruz (drums), and Ess Bobabilla (bass). Some of the band’s most notable songs are “Ikaw Na! (Ang Anghel, Bow)”, “Dear Laarni”, “Pam ToGetHer”, and “I’m Coming”. Benny is currently the only songwriter in the group. He was awarded as the Best Male Songwriter during the Elements Music Camp 2014.

The band was formed in 2014 and began performing within the members’ own small circle of connections. In July of the same year, Burn Mercado started managing the group. It has been unstoppable since.

BennyBunnyBand has already played for a number of respected productions, including Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit, Fringe, Ilustrados, Doc Def, Para sa Sining, Red Ninja, HighTek, and HappyHaus. BennyBunnyBand has also performed in acknowledged events, such as the 4th Thailand Ukulele Festival, the 1st and the 2nd Philippine Ukulele Festival, 1st Mt. Natib Festival, Sikuna Collaborative Art Festival, Intramuros Rising 2, and Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino.

The band is pretty unique for promoting two things: 1) the use of ukulele 2) kuheno rock.

“Ang ukulele po ay hindi isang maliit na gitara,” said Benny before the band’s performance at Wikalele. “May sarili po itong soul,” he added. From time to time, he shares bits of wisdom about the musical instrument, aiming to increased people’s awareness on ukulele.

Meanwhile, kuneho rock is something the band has developed. It is inspired by a combination of vintage pop, punk, 60s, 70s, reggae, and a bit of new wave. The Beatles, Eraserheads, Sugarfree, Guillemots, and Jonathan Coulton are among the artists that have inspired their music. The group strives to make its sound as distinct as possible while still touching a wide range of listeners, regardless of age and musical preference or taste.

BennyBunnyBand is set to release its first EP album entitled “Nagmamahal, BennyBunnyBand” on September 11, 2015 at B-Side, The Collective in Makati City. The album will feature five songs with one bonus track to be revealed on the night of the launch. Gates will open at 7:00 PM while the program will commence at 7:30 PM. Attendees are encouraged to be in their favorite fictional or nonfictional character’s costume.
