What are the Requirements to Run for the Highest Posts in Philippine Government? Find Out.

Election time is fast approaching and several people who deem themselves deserving to have the highest positions in the Philippine government have started filing their certificate of candidacy.

What are the requirements to run for these positions? Let’s find out what the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines says.

President and Vice President:

  • natural born citizen of the Philippines
  • a registered voter
  • able to read and write
  • at least 40 years of age on the day of election
  • a resident of the Philippines for at least 10 years immediately preceding such election

Senator:

  • natural born citizen of the Philippines
  • a registered voter
  • able to read and write
  • at least 35 years of age on the day of election
  • a resident of the Philippines for not less that two years immediately preceding the day of election

Congressman:

  • natural born citizen of the Philippines
  • at least 25 years of age on the day of election
  • able to read and write
  • except the party-list representatives, a registered voter in the district in which he shall be elected, and a resident thereof for a period of not less than one year immediately preceding the day of the election
